How Could Humans Contribute to Natural Disasters?

How can humans contribute to natural disasters? Humans can contribute to natural disasters in many ways. I personally consider hurricanes and earthquakes a primarily target from humans. But how?

Catherine Brahic from Daily News assures humans do contribute to natural disasters. Catherine Brahic says "The answer is yes. From mud volcanoes to disappearing lakes, humans actions can have all sorts of unforeseen environmental consequences."

In Konya ,India in December of 1967 a man made earthquake took place. The region was considered a non-seismic area. It was all caused by a large dam holding high amounts of water that caused pressure on fractures beneath the surface. As the high levels of water increased the pressure on the fractures beneath the surface, the fractures eventually slipped. Causing a 7.5 earthquake killing 200 people and injuring thousands more. Ever since that day, the region of Konya, India was been experiencing frequent earthquakes. There is no doubt this was a human caused earthquake.

Rising temperatures is also a big human contribution to natural disasters. It can help disasters become more destructive. One natural disaster that feeds off high temperatures are hurricanes. Hurricanes intensify more in hot waters.  Making hurricanes be more of a category 4 or 5. To understand this, we must see how hurricanes from and how they intensify. National Geographic has provided a video of how hurricanes work.
As hurricanes will pass through the warm water region that will determine if a tropical storm will transform into a hurricane. It does seem like nature has a big part on this, but we have to remember, the earth's temperatures are rising all over the world. With temperatures rising it will create a higher category hurricane. It will strengthen when it passes over the warm water region. The more heat, the more the storm intensifies. The devastating point of a hurricane is not the winds but the flooding that takes place as the storm passes by. The melting of the ice poles are causing the earth's sea levels to rise. Having higher sea levels in coastal cites makes the flooding to go further into the city and neighboring states causing more destruction and claiming more life's.

So what exactly can we do to do prevent the earth's temperature to rise? How can we prepare for a high category hurricane? Is it safe to build water damns now? What else causes a human made earthquake? What's your take, are humans responsible for the earthquake of 1967 in India?

  1. One thing I would take the time to do is go back to this blog and correct some of the grammar. It was difficult to follow along with. In the first paragraph, you brought up a quote from Catherine Brahic and you introduced it, but didn’t put any end quotes. I’m confused where that quote ends and where your thoughts begin. I really found your facts interesting! It’s true that humans produce large amounts of carbon dioxide in many different ways. I never thought of climate change and tsunamis together. I agree that humans contribute to climate change; we should do a better job at protecting the planet. I like how you added that video that goes further into detail about hurricanes.

  2. I do think that your blog post is very interesting and relevant to today's times. The hurricanes have cause much damages as of lately. I wonder how much the natural disasters compare to those of many years ago? I hope that the government is trying to help stop some of this climate control problems to help stop more future disasters.

  3. The sources you cited in your blog are very interesting and reliable. I would add quick links to your sources. One of my questions is: are natural disaster more frequent in more industriualized countries other than less industrialized areas?
